New video shows the dramatic moment firefighters with the Orange County Fire Authority rescued two cats from a burning apartment in Santa Ana, the department announced Friday.

Video from a body camera worn by one firefighter shows him crawling in the fiery unit, sifting through the smoke to approach a cat lying on the ground, meowing in panic. Carefully, the firefighter picks up the feline and exits the unit. The second cat, which was hiding under a bed, was rescued in a similar fashion.

Prior to the rescue, firefighters deployed hose lines in the unit and sprayed water to douse the flames before entering.

“Their swift actions not only saved the family pets, but also prevented the fire from spreading further and damaging additional units,” OCFA said in a social media post.

The department did not specify what injuries the residents and pets of the unit may have endured, but it said the cats and their owners are recovering.

A cause for the fire was not disclosed, but the department warned the public about the dangers of leaving cooking food unattended and to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from sources of heat.
