
A man and woman were arrested in what authorities said was a thwarted attempt to send narcotics to inmates in the Los Angeles County jail system.
Detectives from the sheriff’s Custody Services Division opened the investigation into the smuggling of contraband into the jail through the United States Postal Service. A search warrant was executed in the southern Los Angeles County seaside community of Hermosa Beach by the department’s Organized Gang Task Force.
Two people were arrested Tuesday in connection with the investigation.
Authorities said a 43-year-old woman sent narcotics to a county jail through the mail. She was cited and released from custody.
A 55-year-old man was arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in custody. Further details about his arrest and the allegations against him were not immediately available.
Authorities intercepted the narcotics before they entered the jails.
The department said it has modernized security to prevent drugs from entering the jail system including the installation of 17 body scanners across the system and two property scanners at the Pitchess Detention Center visiting center in northern Los Angeles County. The agency also has 19 narcotics detection dogs used for random searches at detention centers.
The sheriff’s department also proposed the introduction of a digital mail system using electronic tablets.
Overdose-preventing Narcan (naloxone) is carried by all deputies and available in inmate housing areas.
