A man suspected of driving under the influence remained in custody Tuesday after slamming into a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department vehicle in the Vermont Vista neighborhood and trying to run away from the scene Monday night.

The collision happened at approximately 9:11 p.m. at 98th Street and Vermont Avenue. Responding deputies learned the suspect’s vehicle – a tan two door with a white rooftop – crashed into the deputies’ vehicle at the intersection, LASD Deputy Tracy Koerner told City News Service.

The suspected driver tried to flee after he crashed into the LASD vehicle, said police, but he was arrested near the crash scene.

A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle also ran away. That person had not been found as of Monday evening.

The suspect’s car was traveling at a high rate of speed and both vehicles sustained significant damage, Koerner said.

The LASD deputies sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash and were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance for treatment.
