Two people were rescued Friday afternoon from Malibu after their paragliders crashed into the ocean Friday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told NBC4 Investigates.
Deputies were sent to Pacific Coast Highway near Carbon Canyon Road after receiving a call about people in the water, yelling for help.
When the responding deputies saw two people in the water, they took off their tactical gear, jumped into the water and swam out 50 to 75 yards offshore, the LASD Lost Hills Station said.
“I wanted to note this was not an easy swim. The paragliders were completely exhausted, so not only did the deputies have to carry their own weight as well as the fire department, but they also had to help rescue those paragliders,” said LASD captain Dustin Carr.
One of the deputy rescuers says jumping in was instinct, despite the cold temperature of the water and not being the greatest swimmer.
When the deputies got to the victims, they cut the paragliders that were attached to them as the equipment was dragging them underwater. The deputies say they could also feel themselves being pulled down by the victims who had begun to panic.
The two people, a man and a woman, were safely pulled out of the water without any injuries.
