Two women were found guilty of stalking an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, following him from the federal building in downtown Los Angeles to his home to share his address publicly, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Monday.
The guilty verdict for Cynthia Raygoza, 38, of Riverside, and Ashleigh Brown, 38, of Aurora, Colorado, came down last Friday following a four-day trial.
Raygoza and Brown, dressed in black clothing and covering their faces with black masks, were initially accused of following the ICE agent home and livestreaming their pursuit on their Instagram accounts, “ice_out_of_la,” “defendmesoamericanculture,” and “corn_maiden_design.”
Prosecutors said once the women arrived at the agent’s LA neighborhood, they shouted to bystanders — while continuing to livestream – that their “neighbor is ICE” and “ICE lives on your street and you should know.”
Brown disclosed the agent’s address on Instagram while encouraging their followers to “Come on down,” the DOJ said. Prosecutors also said, as the result of her livestream, several masked people showed up to the agent’s home.
Raygoza in particular was accused of threatening to “pop” the victim.
The agent’s family suffered emotional distress, particularly from racial slurs used by the women, the DOJ said.
The family ended up moving to a different county, having to disrupt the education of the agent’s children, including his 3-year-old son with a disability.
“Justice has been served against two agitators who stalked a federal employee, livestreamed it on social media, and traumatized both the victim and his family,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “Our Constitution protects peaceful protest – not political violence and unlawful intimidation.”
Raygoza and Brown were scheduled to be sentenced on June 8.
The women are facing up to five years in federal prison.
