Drivers who travel through West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley along the 405 Freeway will be recommended to allocate extra time as a couple of freeway lanes will be closed in both directions over the next five months starting Friday night.

Starting Friday, Aug. 22, only three lanes will be open on both northbound and southbound 405 between Victory Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard with the lane reductions lasting for 55 hours.

The closures will begin on Friday at 10 p.m. and end on Monday at 5 a.m. as Caltrans crews repave the lanes and replace sign structures while upgrading guardrail and curb ramps. And the project will last for 25 weekends.

People who travel to UCLA, Santa Monica and LAX are encouraged to use a different route or give themselves extra time to get to their destination. The LAX Flyway service will also be impacted by the lane closures.

Signage will be available to notify drivers about the detour route, Caltrans said, adding public transportation options are highly encouraged.

The first weekend of the project will impact the Westwood area as the northbound lanes will be reduced to three lanes between Santa Monica Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. For the southbound lanes, the closure will occur between Sunset Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard.

The lane improvement project aims to enhance drivers’ safety, preserve and extend the pavement life and improve ride quality, according to Caltrans.
