Officials have identified the man whom officers shot and killed after he charged at them with a knife in Hollywood.
Juan Guerrero Rojo, 38, was identified as the person whom police officers shot while responding to a call of an armed man in crisis at a Hollywood apartment, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office and police. Officers were called to the 1400 block of North Bronson Avenue on Thursday, where they were told the man threatened to end his own life, said he spoke to ghosts and threatened to kill anyone who approached his front door.
At the scene, officers entered the apartment building and approached Guerrero Rojo’s door, where he could be heard yelling. LAPD said the man then opened the door, exited the apartment and advanced toward the officers with a large kitchen knife on him.
“As the subject charged at the officers, an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) and a discharge of a 40-mm less-lethal round occurred near simultaneously,” LAPD said in a statement.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office identified Guerrero Rojo.
Guerrero Rojo was struck by gunfire and taken into custody. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting.
Detectives recovered the knife at the scene and booked it as evidence.
