If you’re doing some late-night driving along the 101 Freeway at Santa Monica Boulevard this week, be prepared for lane closures and delays.

According to Caltrans District 7, overnight lane closures begin Monday on the 101 Freeway at Santa Monica Boulevard/State Route 2 due to the ongoing construction of a $15.8 million project to upgrade existing bridge rails and improve durability along three bridges on the 101 Freeway.

The lane closures will start at 12:01 a.m. every night through March 7, sometimes running through 5 a.m.

Caltrans said motorists should expect these intermittent overnight lane and ramp closures:

  • Up to three lanes along northbound 101 could be closed, between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.
  • Up to three lanes of southbound 101 could be closed, between Western Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.
  • The northbound Santa Monica Boulevard off-ramp could be closed.

The speed limit in the construction zone will be reduced by 10 mph. Caltrans said motorists should drive cautiously and follow all signs detailing the closures.

The ongoing project also spans a bridge along state Route 110/Arroyo Seco Parkway. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
