A reindeer was spotted trotting along the 5 Freeway Saturday, halting traffic near San Fernando as authorities and Caltrans workers attempted to corral the animal.
The California Highway Patrol says they received a call around 6:30 a.m. regarding two reindeer that were walking along the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway, just before the 118 Freeway ramp.
At least one of the reindeer was struck and the other walked off, according to the CHP. The owner was able to recover the reindeer that was struck.
“My first thought was that Santa had lost one of his helpers,” said Steve Bracamontes, who witnessed the traffic jam.
Bracamontes says the deer began moving toward oncoming traffic but Caltrans workers were following the animals.
Video shows two Caltrans trucks zig-zagging in an attempt to corral the reindeer.
It’s unclear if the second deer was located.
