Authorities have arrested a suspect in the 2016 killing of an Apple Valley man after the case was revived nearly a decade later, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies were called to a home in the 12600 block of Apple Valley Road on Aug. 10, 2016, where Michael Brooks was found dead inside the residence. Investigators determined Brooks died from a single gunshot wound and that the injury was not self-inflicted.

The Sheriff’s Department Specialized Investigations Division took over the case and conducted an extensive investigation, identifying and interviewing multiple persons of interest. However, no suspect was identified at the time, and the case eventually went cold.

In 2025, the department’s Cold Case Homicide Team reopened the investigation and identified Michael Roberts as a suspect. Roberts, now 27, was 18 years old at the time of the killing, authorities said.

Roberts was arrested by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s on Jan. 29, 2026, on a no-bail warrant out of Denver, Colorado.

On Feb. 3, 2026, Roberts was in custody at the West Valley Detention Center on an unrelated charge when he was interviewed by investigators. He was arrested following the interview and booked on suspicion of murder, the sheriff’s department said.
