Compton’s mayor has asked the city’s public safety chair to resign Tuesday after a video showed him poking a prominent activist in the eye.
Mayor Emma Sharif has asked for Public Safety Chair Bishop L.J. Guillory’s resignation after he poked activist Najee Ali’s eye at a press conference Friday where Ali and other Compton residents asked for Guillory’s resignation.
“Guillory showed up and provoked and tried to intimidate us,” Ali said. “And he just demonstrated with his actions and actually poking me in the eye, which is now being investigated by the sheriff’s department for battery against me.”
According to residents in Compton, the initial demand for his resignation stemmed from comments Guillory previously made about the Latino community. At Friday’s press conference, speakers raised concerns they had after Guillory made public comments about bringing immigration enforcement to Compton.
Guillory said his comments were taken out of context and provided the following statement:
“The mayor contacted to inform me that tonight at the city council meeting she was going to ask me to resign. I told her that I will think about it and within 24 hours I will write a statement and either resign or decline to resign.”
Mayor Sharif told NBC4 that Guillory did not tell her that he would get back to her in 24 hours about his potential resignation.
