Compton’s public safety chair announced Wednesday he would resign from his role but run for mayor a day after the city’s current mayor asked for his resignation amid the circulation of a video showing him poking a local activist in the eye during a confrontation.

Public Safety Chair Bishop L.J.  Guillory held a press conference in response to Mayor Emma Sharif’s call for his resignation. In his speech, he shared publicly his intentions to run for office.

“Mayor Emma Sharif, I will accept your request for my resignation,” Guillory said. “On Monday of next week at our Public Safety Commission, I will ask for a reorganization and for another person to be nominated by our commission to serve as the chairman of the Public Safety Commission. But in regards to me resigning, I will run for mayor of the great city of Compton.”

On Tuesday, Sharif called for Guillory’s resignation after a video showed him poking the eye of activist Najee Ali during a press conference last week. Ali and other Compton residents held the news conference calling for Guillory’s resignation after he made comments about bringing immigration enforcement to Compton.

Guillory said those comments were taken out of context.

“I will resign at your request to run for your seat. May the best person win,” Guillory said Wednesday.

Compton’s next mayoral race is scheduled to take place in 2026.
