A man accused of firing a gun at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car in front of an apartment complex in Rolling Hills Estates was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice this week after the couple fled to Hawaii, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
Shane Mahoney, 39, was charged with attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm upon a peace officer in connection with the Feb. 22 shooting. If convicted, he’s facing up to 35 years to life in state prison.
Arianna Mitchell, 22, was charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact, as she’s accused of helping Mahoney evade law enforcement following the crime. She’s facing up to three years in prison.
The DA’s office said a warrant for the couple’s arrest was filed on Feb. 25. They were arrested in Hawaii on March 3 with the help of the Kauai Police Department and U.S. Marshals Service.
The pair will be extradited to Los Angeles.
Gunfire in Rolling Hills Estates
On Feb. 22, just before 9 a.m., an LA County Sheriff’s Deputy with the Lomita Sheriff’s Station was wrapping up a call about a reckless driver on Deep Valley Drive.
As the deputy drove away from the neighborhood, Mahoney allegedly fired a rifle from the balcony of a nearby apartment complex, striking the rear of the deputy’s marked patrol car with a single bullet.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), the bullet went through the trunk and rear seat panel of the patrol car but did not reach the front seat where the deputy was sitting.
The deputy was not injured.
Mahoney fled the area.
Following the gunfire, the LASD said investigators recovered surveillance video, an assault rifle, two semi-automatic firearms, and ballistic evidence. They also executed search warrants at the suspects’ home on Deep Valley Drive and their car.
According to detectives, Mahoney and Mitchell allegedly drove to Los Angeles International Airport one day after the shooting, on Feb. 23, and boarded a flight to Kauai.
In a press release Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said this case serves as an example of the daily danger law enforcement officers can encounter.
Hochman said Mahoney’s alleged actions showed “a profound and callous disregard for the people who live in that community.”
“This was an extremely dangerous attack that thankfully did not result in anyone being injured,” Hochman said. “As far as the accomplice goes, if someone thinks they can help someone evade law enforcement and do so without penalty, they are seriously wrong.”
LASD Sheriff Robert G. Luna called the alleged incident “a deliberate and dangerous attack” on the deputy.
“Let me be clear, acts of violence against our personnel will not be tolerated,” Luna said in a press release Thursday. “If you target one of our deputies, we will pursue you relentlessly across city lines, across state lines, wherever necessary, and ensure you are held accountable.”
The investigation is ongoing.
The DA’s Office has not yet released the suspects’ arraignment date. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Geoffrey Lewin.
