Crews are working to recover the nearly 70 heavy shipping containers that fell off a cargo ship into the water at the Port of Long Beach.

The 2-ton containers were stacked on the vessel Mississippi Tuesday morning when they toppled into the water. Some landed on a barge next to the cargo ship, which arrived earlier that morning from China with merchandise that included clothing, shoes, electronics and furniture.

Some merchandise and boxes could be seen floating in the water, but most of the containers that went into the water did not break open.

A Long Beach Fire Department boat used high-pressure jets of water Tuesday to corral the containers in one place.A crane will be used to retrieve containers that sank in the water.

Crews also were working to stabilize containers that remained on the ship, some of which were perilously close to falling into the water.

It was not immediately clear how long the operation will take at Pier G, where some operations were suspended. The rest of the busy international port remained open.

“We’re not clear on how long it’s going to take but we are working as fast as we can to clear it up and get operations back to normal here at Pier G,” said port spokesman Art Marroquin.

No hazardous materials have been identified. There were no injuries.

Details about what caused the collapse were not immediately available.
