One person was killed and another was kidnapped overnight after a confrontation led to an intentional car crash in Montclair, according to police.
Officers with the Montclair Police Department received a call of a fatality on the 9700 block of Benson Avenue at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned three people were involved in a verbal confrontation with a man.
As the group left the area in one vehicle, the man chased them in the area with his own vehicle, opening fire at them. While on Benson Avenue, the man rammed the victim’s vehicle, causing it to crash into a tree, according to police.
One of the vehicle’s occupants was unresponsive after the crash and two others ran away. While trying to flee, a woman who was in the crashed vehicle was kidnapped by the man. She was later to escape while in Ontario and was later taken to a hospital.
The person who was unresponsive after the crash was hospitalized but ultimately died of their injuries. This individual’s name has not been released. The whereabouts of the third occupant is unclear.
Police did not release the name of the man arrested in connection with the violence, but described him in a report as a 40-year-old. His connection to the victims is unknown, but police said all parties “are associated with each other.”
It’s unclear what charges the man could face.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Montclair Police Department at 909-621-4771.
