
A Downey man was identified as the individual who died over the weekend after being swept into a creek in Santa Barbara County, according to sheriffs.
Rosauro Vasquez, 61, was swept away into the Maria Ygnacio Creek near Goleta on Saturday, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) said. Just before noon, his family called 911 to help with the storm-related water rescue.
After nearly two hours of an extensive search effort, rescue teams located Vasquez in the creek near the intersection of Via Parva and San Marcos Road. He was found dead in that area.
The tragedy occurred as Southern California endured days of rain, delivering more than 3 inches of rain to Santa Barbara, according to the county’s flood control district.
Law enforcement urges the public to avoid flooded roadways and hazardous water conditions. Water levels can rise rapidly in creeks and other channels of waterways, with currents potentially being stronger than they appear.
