The 92-year-old driver who crashed into a 99 Ranch Market in Westwood earlier this month, leaving three people dead and injuring others, was informed at the scene that her driving privileges had been pulled, the Los Angeles Police Department told NBC4 Investigates.
The woman was told to contact the California Department of Motor Vehicles for an interview within five days of the crash on South Westwood Boulevard or her license would be suspended, the department said. Due to the fatalities in the crash, the DMV will interview the woman and check on her demeanor and cognitive skills, police said.
It was unclear Thursday whether the woman had contacted the DMV.
As for the investigation into the crash, the LAPD is working on retrieving onboard electronics from the car that record collision data. The agency also will look at medical and full DMV records to see if the driver was ever warned about driving issues or medical reasons not to drive.
Once LAPD detectives have all the information, they will present the case to prosecutors to see whether criminal charges are warranted.
The driver was making what appeared to be an unsafe left turn before clipping a bicyclist and crashing into the 99 Ranch Market, the LAPD earlier told NBC4 Investigates. It remains unclear whether the driver panicked and pressed the accelerator pedal or whether she thought she was braking and hit the wrong pedal.
The car, a Mercedes Benz sedan, ended up entirely inside the front of the store. It will be examined to determine whether there are any mechanical issues.
The driver is cooperating with investigators, police said.
One of the three victims was identified by the county medical examiner as 42-year-old Deris Renjo. A 55-year-old man and a 30-year-old man also died at the scene, according to the LAFD.
Two of the deceased were employees of the market and one was a customer.
At least six people were injured.
Two victims listed in critical condition were both 35-year-old men, while the other two victims in moderate condition were identified as men aged 37 and 38. Two other people — identified as the sedan driver and the bicyclist — were evaluated at the scene but declined transport to a hospital.
