A man died Saturday while helping to keep his 7-year-old son alive after their kayak capsized during a trip to a Riverside County lake, according to California State Parks.

Peace officers with California State Parks received reports of screaming and people in distress in the water near Moreno Beach at Lake Perris State Recreation Area. There, the father and the son were struggling after their kayak capsized.

Officials arrived at the scene on a patrol vessel and recovered the man, who was described as “unconscious and partially submerged.” The child was on the kayak and conscious, holding his father.

“Investigators noted that the father heroically kept his son afloat throughout the ordeal, supporting him until rescue personnel arrived,” California State Parks said in a statement.

After pulling both the kayakers from the lake, officers performed CPR on the father. Paramedics then arrived and took them to Riverside University Health System, where the father died. The child was evaluated and treated at the hospital.

“California State Parks extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy,” the agency said.

The identity of the deceased was not disclosed.

It’s unclear what caused the kayak to capsize. Law enforcement officials said the tragedy remains under investigation.
