Former USC and New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was arrested following a stabbing in Indianapolis, according to police in the city.
The Associated Press reported Sanchez, 38, was stabbed Saturday in what was described as “an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence.” The athlete-turned-commentator for Fox Sports is described as being in stable condition following the stabbing, according to the network.
Indianapolis said Sanchez was arrested for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication in connection with the incident. It’s unclear what led up to the stabbing.
As of Saturday afternoon, Sanchez was still in the hospital, police said.
“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support,” the network’s statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
Sanchez’s alma mater and his former NFL team issued statements wishing him a swift recovery.
“The USC football community sends our support to Mark and his family,” USC Football said in a post on social media.
“Sending our thoughts and love to Mark Sanchez and his family,” the Jets said in its statement. “Hoping for a speedy recovery, 6.”
The Orange County native was redshirted as a freshman at USC in 2005. He went on to earn the starting quarterback position in 2008 as a junior, where he collected 3,207 yards passing and 34 touchdowns.
Sanchez played his last game for the Jets in 2012 and played for multiple NFL franchises before retiring in 2019.
