Former WNBA and USC basketball player Shay Murphy says her 2014 season championship ring was stolen from her San Fernando Valley apartment.

Murphy, who won the WNBA title with the Phoenix Mercury that year, said she noticed the ring was missing when she was recently moving out of the apartment in Sherman Oaks. Murphy said she hired a group of movers off the street who were not associated with a professional moving company.

The ring is valued at about $10,000, but also represents the dedication and effort put into reaching the WNBA and winning a championship.

“I was a little emotional, I’m not going to lie,” Murphy said. “I did shed a lot of tears. It’s earned. You can’t really buy that. It doesn’t take away from the moment I’ve accomplished. I still have the jersey I’ve actually played in, but it hurts my feelings a little bit.”

A theft report was filed with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Born in Canoga Park, Murphy played at Montclair Prep in Van Nuys before competing at USC from 2003 to 2007. She was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx in 2007. She also played for the Detroit Shock, Washington Mystics, Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky before joining the Phoenix Mercury in 2014 and 2017, part of which she spent with the San Antonio Stars.

Murphy’s former team, the Mercury, are on the brink of elimination in the WNBA Finals against the Las Vegas Aces. Game 4 is Friday in Phoenix with the Aces up 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.
