Emergency crews are on standby Monday for potential weather-related incidents as downpours continue to drench Southern California with measurable rain.
In the San Fernando Valley and neighboring regions, road accidents due to the storm snarled traffic and endangered drivers. Fernando Ramos Ramirez was among the drivers involved in a traffic incident on slippery roads.
He said he was driving at about 40 mph on the 101 Freeway in Calabasas when his vehicle spun out of control and flipped over onto an embankment. Incredible, he came out unscathed.
“I wasn’t doing anything,” he said. “I was just driving calmly.”
Ramirez recalled his vehicle swaying from side to side as the downpour continued, forcing him to lose control. He said he held onto the steering wheel but opted not to hit the brakes, worrying that would make things worse.
Jackson Vieira witnessed the crash and sprang into action to help.
“I saw him crawling out, so I pulled over and I went to check if there was anybody hurt,” he said.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the rollover crash at 11:09 a.m. and cleared the scene within minutes since the driver was not trapped and did not need medical attention.
“It felt like the right thing to do,” Vieira said. “Nobody had began to help him yet and wanted to make sure he was OK.”
Ramirez said that although rattled, he’s relieved he’s OK after the crash. He added he was grateful to Vieira for helping him out of the wreckage and offering him a ride.
