Community members in San Bernardino put “love thy neighbor” into practice on Christmas Day as they went inside a burning home and rescued residents as well as their pets, officials said Thursday.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department said the fire was reported at a home on 7th Street near H Street at around 3 p.m..
Before firefighters were able to arrive at the scene, neighbors went inside and woke up a husband and wife who were sleeping at the time. The good Samaritans were also able to rescue the couple’s five dogs, who were not injured.
Once fire crews reached the burning home, they realized the residence was a converted into a quadplex with two units in the front and two others in the back.
The front dwelling spaces were severely affected by the fire, while the two back units sustained smoke and water damage.
It was not immediately clear what cause the fire.
The rescued couple was taken to a hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
Two people, a mother and a toddler daughter, who lived next to the converted home were also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.
