The days ahead of Christmas can be some of the most hectic on the calendar, but it is also the most cinematic stretch of the year.

We don’t simply mean that decorations are particularly dazzling or the various holiday parties are sumptuously realized; rather, getting cozy inside a theater, all to savor a story for 90 minutes or a couple of hours, is how we decompress, and find joy, during a stressful period.

Cinemas around Los Angeles will again deliver for those who delight in the reel-based arts in the days ahead, with some special treats on the calendar.

“Love & Basketball” is celebrating 25 years with an Academy Museum celebration.

The Dec. 20 screening at the Ted Mann Theater is sold out, but a stand-by option is available on the museum’s site. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood will stop by the film-championing institution for a Q&A, a treat for fans of the beloved film.

But don’t depart the movie-cool destination just yet: The Academy Museum has a full-to-brimming film calendar as December wraps, with “Star Wars — Episode IV: A New Hope” bringing the festive Force to our worlds Dec. 20 and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in 4K set for Dec. 27.

American Cinematheque also has several dramatic and comedic bon bons on its year-ending schedule, with the fabulous “Auntie Mame” holding court at The Egyptian Dec. 19, “Father of the Bride” summoning the matrimonial mirth at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica Dec. 20, and the ever-saucy “Bad Santa” popping up at the Los Feliz Theatre over a couple of nights ahead of Christmas.

The New Beverly is all about the yuletide yuks, and occasionally yucks, this season; “Gremlins” is creating holiday havoc Dec. 18, while “Die Hard” will deliver the yippee-ki-yay spirit to the vintage one-screener on Dec. 23 and 24.

Oh yes: “A Muppet Christmas Carol” is going full New Bev, hurray, on Dec. 20 and 21.

And if you’re hoping to revisit some of your treasured childhood classic on the big screen, Regal Cinemas is showing a bevy of holiday gems through Dec. 31. Find your local theater, and what’s playing, here.
