Police in Newport Beach warned Friday of an ongoing investigation involving hazardous material that led to roadway closures as people visited the beach on a hot holiday.
As officers assessed the situation, Carnation Avenue between Bayside Drive and Coast Highway was shut down, just a few blocks from China Cove Beach.
While authorities did not say what the hazmat situation involved, they asked residents to stay indoors. Visitors were also urged to avoid the area.
