As preparations for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games get underway throughout Los Angeles, UCLA is getting ready to transition its campus into the Athlete Village.

LA28 officials expect 15,000 athletes to compete in the Games, participating in 800 events in more than 40 sports.

The university, which spans over 400 acres in Westwood, served as the residential site for athletes and coaches during the 1984 Olympics.

However, the school was tasked with hosting only 4,000 athletes during those Games, but in 2028 will need to support over three times that number.

Residential spaces are less of a concern thanks to a housing boom in the area over the last 40 years.

From hosting World Series games and All-Star moments to serving as an exhibition venue during the 1984 Summer Olympics, Dodger Stadium is now set to welcome the world again as an official competition site for the 2028 Summer Olympics. Mekahlo Medina reports for NBC4 at 4pm on Feb. 20, 2026.

But, another major aspect is on many people’s minds: the food.

“The Olympic Committee came out here and did a tour,” said Joey Martin, the school’s senior executive chef. “They were saying, ‘Well, we’re not sure. You have the infrastructure, you have the beds and everything, but what about the food?’”

Martin said the Committee toured the university four years ago and was impressed by its dining options.

The school’s hospitality services will serve about 42,000 meals per day.

“We embrace it,” Martin said. “We’re looking forward because it’s world-class athletes that come here, but there’s world-class students that are here already.”

The university said its residential facilities have fitness centers, TV lounges and other living accommodations that athletes can use during the Games.

With just over two years until LA28, UCLA will continue to prepare its campus to welcome competitors and coaches.

The dining staff will finalize their culinary offerings, even testing out the viral chocolate muffin from the 2024 Paris Olympics with students.
