A Hesperia family who describes their 13-year-old son as a walking miracle for surviving a brain injury is hoping for another miracle in securing a special needs bicycle for the teenager.
Evin Jace Ortega, 13, survived a severe brain injury and more than a dozen strokes two years ago that changed his life. Brittany Ortega, the boy’s mother, said it began when four of her children had a throat virus, including Evin.
“When he took the antibiotics for the throat virus, his autoimmune got confused so his white blood cells attacks his platelets and bunched together and made blood clots in his brain,” she said.
According to the boy’s parents, a titanium plate was placed in the boy’s skull. A portion of his brain was removed, which left him nonverbal and with limited body movement because of the strokes he endured.
“I haven’t had a conversation back and forth since it happened, and it’s been one of the hardest things for me,” said David Ortega, the boy’s father.
“He still only says pretty much one word — I love you,” Birttany said. “It means the world. It’s what I would say to him all day, every day when he was in the hospital.”
Now, the Ortegas are hoping to give their son a chance to enjoy life by participating in a drawing to win a bicycle designed for children with special needs from the nonprofit organization, Friendship Circle. Evin’s parents are hoping to get one of their own to help with his ongoing therapy while giving him a chance to smile again.
The family says the teen’s health insurance is limited, which is why they are hoping to win the bike in the drawing. Otherwise, they would have to spend thousands of dollars to buy one.
