As Koreatown tenants complain about their landlords turning the parking lot into accessory dwelling units or ADUs, some Hollywood residents are also crying foul about the changes in their buildings.

One of the Hollywood residents who recently lost his parking spot at his apartment complex is a man named Luis. The man, who’s lived in a complex on Mariposa Avenue for 15 years, said his landlord removed half of the parking in his building earlier this year to start construction on several ADUs.

When NBC Los Angeles met up with Luis, he had to park two and a half blocks away after losing a coveted parking spot near his building. For the disabled Navy veteran, walking two blocks in 90-degree weather could be grueling.

Another building on Mariposa Avenue also lost all its parking spots as the property owner began building ADUs.

Jose Vasquez, who lived in the building, said he’s lost his parking spot after two years of living in the apartment complex.

“There’s a lot of people that struggle,” Elizabeth Rios, another Hollywood resident, chimed. “They have to park two, three blocks away even though they come in the middle of the night.”

NBCLA has reached out to the landlords of the buildings on Mariposa but did not hear back.

Whether one thinks the landlords’ decision is greedy or not, making ADUs where a parking lot used to be is completely legal thanks to a new law that went into effect this year.

NBCLA also reached out to Los Angeles city representatives to see if they could be any help for impacted tenants.
