An Inland Empire family is looking for the driver who critically injured their toddler and infant in a hit-and-run crash in San Bernardino earlier this week.

On Monday, Karina Barrientos was with her two young children and other families walking home from a play date when the crash occurred. While crossing Arrowhead Avenue at 27th Street, a gray-colored vehicle struck a baby stroller, dragging it down the block and injuring Barrientos’ young children, according to the San Bernardino Police Department.

“Everything was very chaotic,” Barrientos said. “We were crossing the street when a car, not sure what kind, came extremely fast and collided with my two babies — my 3-year-old and 4-month-old.”

Esther Bobadilla lives across the street and said she was setting up her Christmas lights outside her home when she heard people screaming and rushed out to help.

“It was awful,” Bobadilla said. “The mom was running behind the car, which was dragging the baby in the stroller. It finally stopped and the mother grabbed her baby and screamed for help.”

Barrientos’ children remain in the hospital with injuries police described as life-threatening. According to the mother, her children are in a lot of pain but are showing signs of improvement.

“My daughter has bleeding in the head and according to the scans, it’s not getting worse,” Barrientos said. “My son has a broken leg and they did a surgery and has a metal plate and screws.”

Police said the driver fled the scene and detectives remain on the search for that individual. A detailed description of the car responsible for the hit-and-run was not immediately available.

“I don’t have any words,” Barrientos said. “What was the rush or reason? There was no attempt to stop.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Bernardino Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 909-384-5742.
