Business owners in the wedding industry banded together to share their disapproval of Los Angeles County leaders’ plan to increase the cost of marriage licenses.

Last month, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors announced a 93% increase in public marriage licenses, raising the cost from $91 to $176. Confidential marriage licenses are slated to increase from $85 to $220.

“Eighty-five dollars is understandable; $220 can put us out of business,” said Dalia Cuevas, who runs Tina’s Wedding Chapel in Van Nuys.

Alan Katz, who owns the Cute Little Wedding Chapel in Long Beach, started a campaign that includes others in the wedding industry to fight back against the plan. He and several others spoke out at a recent Board of Supervisors meeting and met with the LA County Registrar Recorder’s Office.

“We had to stand up and really put our voices out there,” he said.

Following their discussions, the County Registrar Recorder’s Office told NBC4 it pulled the proposal for further review, just a day before it was set to be voted on.

“Sometimes we don’t, we feel like we’re too little and the government isn’t going to pay attention,” Cuevas said. “But the fact that they did and we’re voicing our concern made a difference, is really beautiful.”

According to the Registrar’s Office, marriage service fees have not been updated in more than 10 years. It adds that any new costs would help offset rising wages, inflation and technology updates.

It’s unclear when the Board of Supervisors will reconsider cost increases for marriage licenses.
