A Los Angeles police officer was charged with insurance fraud as he is accused of exaggerating an on-duty injury to collect disability benefits, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.
Christopher Brandon Carnahan of Norwalk had initially reported injuring his left elbow while on duty on May 22, 2023.
The purported injury allowed him to be Temporary Totally Disabled status, which grants workers’ compensations during recovery.
But prosecutors said while picking up disability checks, Carnahan was actively engaged in physical activities, including completing “many skydives” at Skydive Elsinore in Lake Elsinore and working out at a fitness center.
“This is an officer who knows the law and understands the standards he is sworn to uphold,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. “Claiming to be temporarily totally disabled and collecting disability benefits intended for injured workers while engaging in physically demanding activities like skydiving is a crime.”
Carnahan was held on $100,000 bail as of Wednesday.
If convicted as charged, Carnahan could face up to six years in prison.
It was not immediately clear whether Carnahan was still an employee at the Los Angeles Police Department. NBC Los Angeles reached out to the LAPD for confirmation.
