A sheriff’s deputy’s marked patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire Sunday in the Rolling Hills Estates area, authorities said.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), deputies responded to a call about multiple vehicles reportedly speeding in the area around 9:08 a.m. in the 600 block of Deep Valley Drive.
A deputy assigned to the department’s Lomita Station had just finished speaking with the reporting party and was driving away when he heard a loud pop coming from the rear of his patrol vehicle.
After stopping to assess the situation and exiting the vehicle, the deputy discovered it had been struck by gunfire.
“He observed and confirmed what appeared to be a single bullet hole on the passenger side of the trunk hatch; no exit bullet hole was found,” said LASD.
LASD said the deputy was not injured.
Deputies, along with officers from the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, the Torrance Police Department, and the department’s Aero Bureau, set up a containment perimeter in the surrounding area to investigate the situation.
Officials urged the public to avoid the area surrounding Silver Spur Road between Crenshaw Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lomita Station at (310) 539-1661. Anonymous tips may be provided through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
