Female inmates at the Los Angeles County jail celebrated Christmas Day mass with LA County Sheriff Robert Luna and Archbishop Jose Gomez Thursday.
The mass was held at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood Thursday morning as the sheriff’s department aimed to offer inmates an opportunity to share a spiritual moment and reflect during the holiday season, the LASD said.
This was the first mass that Sheriff Luna celebrated with the inmates since the jail system began the Religious and Volunteer Services Office under its Jail Chaplaincy Program, which provides spiritual and emotional support to inmates and correctional staff.
“The program coordinates all religious activities within the county’s custody facilities and ensures that
inmates have access to ministers of their own faith,” the department said in a statement.
All types of religious faiths are represented in the program, including Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Armenian
Orthodox, Protestant, Orthodox Jewish, Reform Jewish, Buddhist, Jehovah’s Witness, Christ Scientist, Latter Day Saints and Muslim, according to the sheriff’s department.
