Santa Ana police shot and killed an 18-year-old man Wednesday night after a traffic stop escalated into a pursuit and confrontation inside a parking garage, authorities said.
Police say the shooting occurred around 10:29 p.m. after the driver failed to yield during a stop near Santa Ana Boulevard and French Street and continued for several blocks before stopping in a parking structure in the 400 block of East 4th Street.
The driver, identified as Victor Lopez of Santa Ana, exited the vehicle, dropped a loaded handgun, and initially walked toward an officer with his hands raised, police said.
Lopez then turned back toward the firearm and lowered his hands, ignoring the officers’ orders, according to Santa Ana PD. Lopez was struck in the upper torso and pronounced dead at the scene.
A loaded Walther 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene, according to police. Lopez is also believed to have been in possession of suspected fentanyl.
Lopez’s 19-year-old girlfriend and their toddler were inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
The case is now under investigation by Santa Ana police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
