A semi-truck driver who is accused of causing a deadly crash involving eight vehicles in Ontario is no longer facing DUI charges, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

The driver, 21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh of Yuba City, was arrested and booked on Oct. 21 at the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter. Following toxicology reports, officials say none of the substances tested in Singh’s blood tested positive.

“Toxicology reports confirmed none of the substances tested were present in the defendant’s blood at the time the test was rendered. However, the case remains a grossly negligent homicide, and we’ve filed an amended complaint to reflect the new findings. The new amended complaint can be found attached below,” wrote the DA’s office in a statement on Friday.

Singh still faces charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, the DA said.

Three people were killed, and four others were injured when four semi-trucks, two pick-up trucks and two cars collided along the 10 Freeway near the 15 Freeway interchange.

A witness, who was standing by a parking lot that faces the 10 Freeway at the time of the incident, said the crash sounded like a big explosion as he recalled a red truck, allegedly driven by Singh, barreling down the freeway before the impact.

Jashanpreet Singh remained in custody at no bail. Christian Cázares reports for the NBC4 News at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025.

“It didn’t stop. It didn’t swerve. It didn’t make any kind of maneuvers. It just went straight in,” Jason Calmelat described what he saw.

The California Highway Patrol said traffic on the westbound lanes had slowed down right before the crash, but Singh’s truck did not stop and caused the massive chain reaction crash.

“The truck rolled and veered to the right into the embankment, and I saw the truck drive jump out because it was on fire,”Calmelat said.

The three victims who were killed in the crash were not identified. The four injured people including Singh, and a mechanic who was helping change a tire on the side of the freeway at the time of the crash.

“It was one of those crashes where there were car parts everywhere. We had a hazardous material incident. It was a very large scene,” Officer Rodrigo Jimenez with the CHP said. “This could have been prevented if somebody had been paying attention sober.
