Colorado officials Friday identified the identity of the man, who was killed in a crash in Clear Creek County while driving a Santa Clarita girls youth hockey team to a tournament.

The Clear Creek County Coroner’s Office said Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana Villegas, 38, died when the sprinter van carrying 10 people collided with a Colorado Department of Transportation snow plow.

Villegas was the father of one of the youth hockey players for the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, which is made up of girls at age 12 and under, according to Prescott Littlefield, president of the team.

Seven people, four children and three adults, were taken to a nearby hospital. All four children were discharged, according to Denver Health. Two adults were hospitalized in serious condition while another was in fair condition as of Thursday.

Despite the tragedy, the hockey team continued with its schedule and competed in a game Friday morning. It was also set to play at 3 p.m. California time.

“Our Amazing 12AA girls have chosen to show their strength and support for each other by playing in this weekend’s tournament,” the team said on social media. “They will be short-benched, but every single stride they take out on the ice, every goal they make and every puck they save will have a special meaning.”

LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Santa Clarita, issued a statement Thursday, expressing her condolences.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic crash in Colorado involving members of the Santa Clarita Flyers girls hockey community,” Barger said. “The loss of life and the serious injuries suffered by these young athletes and those traveling with them is devastating.”

Clear Creek County authorities said the deadly collision happened when the driver of a Colorado Department of Transportation snow plow lost control, slammed through the median on I-70 and eventually crashed into the van that Villegas was driving. The impact of the crash pushed the van to go down an embankment, according to the Clear County Sheriff’s Office.
