A use-of-force investigation is underway after officers fired their weapon at a domestic violence suspect, who is accused of threatening his girlfriend with a firearm while holding her hostage in Northridge.

The initial incident began at 2 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to the area of Balcom Avenue and Rayen Street off White Oak Avenue in Northridge after a caller reported hearing fighting and a woman crying, the Los Angeles Police Department said Monday.

When officers arrived at the home on Balcom Avenue, they found a man, who was later identified as Louis Jordan Cortez, holding a woman, who later turned out to be his girlfriend, hostage at gunpoint.

After Cortez failed to surrender and refused to drop his weapon, officers opened fire, the LAPD said.

“During the incident, Cortez fired one round from his handgun at the victim,” police said in a statement.

Even after being shot by police, Cortez did not immediately surrender and remained in the front yard of the home, the LAPD said. Once officers negotiated his surrender, Cortez was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for a gunshot wound.

Once he’s released from the hospital, Cortez will be booked for assault with a deadly weapon, the LAPD added.

The gun used by Cortez was recovered from the scene to be part of the investigation.

No officer or neighbor was hurt during the incident. The LAPD did not elaborate on the condition of the girlfriend.
