The mother of a 5-year-old girl found walking alone on a West Hollywood street and asking for food was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of felony child abuse.
April Cordova, 30, was arrested Saturday after neighbors said they saw her returning to her house, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies responded to the residence and took her into custody.
An initial court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday, according to jail records. It was not immediately clear whether Cordova has an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
The girl’s father, 33-year-old Cody Jefferies, was arrested last week at the home on suspicion of felony corporal injury on a child and neglect.
The child was seen at about 11 a.m. Thursday wandering on a West Hollywood street and asking for food. She appeared to have marks on her neck, according to the sheriff’s department.
The child was in protective custody.
