The mother of a toddler found alone with a dog inside a vehicle after an attempted car theft in the Highland Park area has been arrested, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC4 Investigates.

The boy’s mother was found Tuesday night and arrested on suspicion of child abandonment, the sources said. Details about what led to her arrest were not immediately available.

The investigation unfolded after LAPD officers responded at about 10 a.m. Sunday to the 300 block of North Avenue 52 after a car owner reported a man tried to steal his vehicle before leaving the neighborhood northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The owner then found a child and a dog inside his vehicle, according to the LAPD.

The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services published the child’s photograph and asked the public for help finding his family.

The boy is still in protective custody. The dog is still with animal services.

A man who was with the woman remains outstanding, and the investigation continues.

Anyone with information regarding the child, his family, or any additional details about the attempted theft and the suspect was urged to contact the LAPD Northeast Division at 323-561-3211 or Detective Ryan Lamar by email at [email protected].
