The Narbonne High School girls’ varsity basketball team entered Wednesday’s tournament match under unexpected circumstances after all of their equipment was stolen from the team van the night before.
Thieves made off with at least 10 bags Tuesday night as the Harbor City team was having dinner at a fast-food restaurant in Alhambra after their match. Uniforms, shoes, school laptops and other personal items were stolen.
Virchus Ferguson, mother of Narboone junior Melia Miller, says among the items stolen were a pair of Beats headphones that she had just gifted her daughter for her birthday.
“She was actually devastated,” said Ferguson. “It’s definitely like the Grinch who stole Christmas. A grinch who stole 10 plus backpacks.”
The team’s coaches hope to raise money to buy new equipment by their next tournament in Las Vegas on Dec. 19. For now, the Lady Guachos are hooping with what they’ve got.
“Without the equipment, we are unsure what’s going to happen if they are just going to use warm up uniforms or uniforms from last year,” said Ferguson.
The team filed a police report, but Ferguson is doubtful that it will be found.
“I’m sure a lot of this stuff is probably just discarded on the side other road,” said Ferguson.
