A 16-year-old Narbonne High School student died over the weekend after falling from a freeway entrance ramp during a street takeover in the Bay Area.
A Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson confirmed that Jose Cuevas, a 16-year-old student at the school in Los Angeles’ Harbor City area, died in the tragic fall in the Contra Costa County community of Crockett.
“He was a good person,” said Andrew Lopez, who said her grew up with Jose. “He liked to put others before himself. It’s just been kind of sad, because I had my second period with him and he sat right next to me and it’s just empty.”
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the street takeover, or sideshow, at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department. Officers learned someone, later identified as Jose, fell 75 feet from a nearby freeway entrance ramp and died.
Video showed a long line of cars backed up on the freeway ramp near an intersection where driver were performing burnouts. The events, at which drivers block off intersections and roads to perform stunts, have drawn large crowds of spectators, including in several Los Angeles communities.
In Los Angeles, some street takeovers have been connected to other crimes, including crowds of people ransacking nearby businesses.
“I think this is tragic example of the dangers of side shows,” said CHP Sgt. Andrew Barclay. “Even if you have 10 officers showing up, we’re outnumbered.”
