
An officer was hospitalized Wednesday night after Riverside police say a firearm was discharged during an altercation.
The incident happened while the Riverside police officer was responding to a mental health emergency around 6:45 p.m. in the area of University Avenue and Dwight Avenue.
During the response, the officer was involved in a physical altercation with the suspect, according to police. At one point in the altercation between the two, a firearm went off.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The person involved in the altercation was in police custody and also transported to a hospital. The extent of their injuries is unclear.
It’s unclear who owned the weapon that was discharged.
Riverside police are urging the public to avoid the area as the investigation is underway.
