Public health officials warned dog owners Friday to be on alert after a dog in the San Fernando Valley was found to have raccoon roundworm eggs.

Racoon roundworm is a parasite that’s commonly found in the feces of racoons.

Dogs that ingest racoon roundworm eggs could get sick, showing symptoms, including lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea. In serious cases, dogs could experience neurological issues like loss of coordination, paralysis and seizures.

The LA County Department of Public Health said it received the report of racoon roundworm or Baylisascaris eggs in a healthy dog after the domestic animal had a routine veterinary exam.

This is the first formally reported detection of racoon roundworm eggs in a dog in LA County, the health department said.

While the risk to humans is extremely low, health officials urged pet owners to take extra caution by removing dog feces from backyards quickly.

“Pick up dog feces daily from yards, parks, and public spaces,” public health officials said. “Because eggs require two to four weeks in the environment to become infectious, quick cleanup prevents risk before it begins.”

If racoon feces are found in yards or patios, they should be removed as soon as possible, the department added.

Preventing racoons and wildlife near homes by securing trash cans and not leaving food around could also help preventing racoon roundworm eggs in dogs.

In 2024, public health investigators examined two human cases of racoon roundworm.
