A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy died after being shot by a domestic violence suspect in Rancho Cucamonga Monday, Sheriff Shannon Dicus said.

The slain deputy was identified as Andrew Nunez, a six-year veteran with the department.

Dicus said he was responding to a domestic violence call involving a man with a gun before he was shot one time in the head. Nunez was taken to a hospital but was declared dead at around 1 p.m..

“We’re embedded in sorrow. Unfortunately, for our department, this has happened way to often,” the sheriff added.

Nunez was survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, his mother as well as four brothers and sisters, according to Dicus. The deputy and his wife were expecting a child as well.

“He was a wonderful father. He was a wonderful deputy sheriff,” Dicus said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom offered his sympathies to the fallen deputy and his loved ones.

“On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Nunez,” Newsom said in a statement. “His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement. We honor his life and service with gratitude; may his sacrifice never be forgotten.”

The governor added that flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.

The suspect, who later became injured while running away from deputies and crashing into a car on a freeway in Upland, was in stable condition.

The car that clipped the suspect’s motorcycle was driven by an off-duty narcotics officer, according to the sheriff.

“I’m very thankful for that he brought this to a close because in addition to potentially assaulting others with a firearm, the speeds that were reached with that motorcycle … if you can imagine what that could have done to just unsuspecting motorists on our freeway,” Dicus said.

Investigators were waiting to interview the suspect as of Monday afternoon.

“We are looking at this as a murder of a peace officer, which makes it a significant case,” San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson said, adding his office will make charging decisions in the next two days.

No one else was injured during the shooting investigation and the pursuit crash.
