The San Fernando Valley is buzzing with excitement as it makes preparations to host some Olympic matches in 2028 for the first time in the region’s history.

In 1932 and 1984, the Valley watched the Olympics from the sidelines while they were held in Los Angeles. In two years, though, the Sepulveda Basin and Lake Balboa will be front and center as it hosts a handful of Olympic events.

City Councilmember Imelda Padilla, who represents District 6, championed for the Valley’s inclusion in the global event. She said with 2 million people living in the San Fernando Valley, it was important for the region to participate.

“It’s close to 40 percent of LA,” she said. “So, we finally have 40 percent of our residents not feel left out like in the past.”

The Olympic hub in this region will be known as the Valley Zone, which will host BMX, skateboarding, pentathlon and 3-on-3 basketball. Padilla said everything is still in the planning stages, but design and structural upgrades are expected at all complexes.

“This is going to be an opportunity where our local businesses are going to benefit,” Padilla said. “Our local neighbors are going to be much more excited and play a role.”

Nancy Hoffman, president of the San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce, said the impact could be significant. With nearly two million people living in the region, thousands of businesses could benefit from the global spotlight.

“There are many businesses here and those that will be benefited the most are already planning for LA28,” Hoffman said.

The Chamber of Commerce said it plans to post information on its website to help businesses prepare and maximize opportunities ahead of 2028.
