A Santa Clarita youth football team is the star of its home field and now, a Super Bowl advertisement that touched the hearts of viewers across the country.
Young SC Warrior football players starred in the NFL’s commercial for its “Champion” campaign, which highlights the importance of football coaches and mentors. The road to stardom for the young athletes began when one of the team moms received a text about the professional league seeking a youth football team.
After submitting photos of the boys, the team was selected for the commercial, and the rest is history.
“I got happy and I was like, ‘I’m going to be famous,’” said Johnny Barboza, who’s on the team.
In the commercial, a young player heightens his confidence by stating affirmations to himself in the mirror and to his toys – mantras he learns from his coach. Ormonde Jefferson, coach of the Santa Clarita Warriors, said the mantras said in the commercial ring true.
“That’s the message that we pretty much preached, like all season,” he said.
Jefferson said he was proud his players acted like professionals during the production.
“For them to actually see a commercial where they’re showing superheroes and this kid’s talking to these superheroes and they can relate to that, they can say, ‘OK, you know this, you know.’ He’s telling these, these superheroes not to give up because even superheroes get discouraged sometimes,” Jefferson said.
