
Another wave of rain soaked parts of Southern California early Friday morning with more wet weather in the forecast.
Flood watches were in effect for parts of the region, where already soaked hillsides prone to slides are picking up additional moisture from the storm fueled by an atmospheric river. Flooding is possible Friday morning on streets and freeways.
Three southbound 5 Freeway lanes were blocked in the Santa Clarita area due to morning flooding. Flooding also was reported on part of the 101 Freeway in Universal City.
Another 2 to 5 inches of rain are likely to fall in the mountains. Other areas should receive less than 2 inches, unless isolated thunderstorms develop with heavy rains. Showers are expected to become more scattered Friday after steady overnight rain.
A flood watch was in effect for widespread parts of Los Angeles County through Friday afternoon.
Parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties also are under a flood watch. Scattered rain was expected to move east out of Los Angeles County in the afternoon, bringing wet conditions to those areas.
Evacuation warnings and orders were issued earlier this week in advance of the storm. Some expired Thursday, but warnings remain in effect for both the Palisades and Eaton burn areas. Evacuation warnings for residents also were extended near the Agua Dulce, Lidia, Franklin, Bridge, Canyon, Owen, Hurst and Kenneth burn areas.
In downtown Los Angeles, the total rainfall of 2.59 inches of rain through noon Thursday made the Christmas Eve-Christmas Day holiday period the wettest since 3.24 inches in 1971. The rain was accompanied by powerful winds that reached 80 mph in some areas.
Expect temperatures in the lower 60s and upper 50s for most areas. Strong winds are in the forecast for inland communities.
Another chance of rain arrives Wednesday into Thursday.
