A small single-engine aircraft crashed into a drainage area behind homes in Ventura County on Sunday, leaving two occupants critically injured, authorities said.
The two people on board had to be extricated from the plane and were transported to nearby hospitals with severe injuries, said the Ventura County Fire Department.
Authorities confirmed that no homes or other property were struck and no injuries on the ground were reported.
There was no fire reported at the scene, and it remains unclear how much fuel, if any, remained on the aircraft.
Ventura County firefighters stayed on site to address potential hazards.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are en route.
Authorities did not immediately release the identities of the victims.
This is a developing story.
