The pilot of a small plane and her two passengers were unharmed after the plane’s engine failed Sunday and she made a bumpy emergency landing into a watermelon field near Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia.

The crash was reported just after 5 p.m. Sunday at Henry Mayo Drive and The Old Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Pilot Anastasia Vournas told a videographer at the scene that her engine sputtered and stopped after she left the Santa Paula Airport, in Ventura County.

Vournas said she could not return to the airport over mountains, hills and freeways, but that the watermelon patch provided a good alternative.

It was “a little bumpy on the watermelons, but I did what I was trained,” she said.

Pilots always have to be aware of their surroundings, she said. “I always have to think that if I lose my engine, where am I going to put this down.”
