The man suspected of murdering San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nunez was identified by authorities Tuesday as a 47-year-old man who lived in an apartment close to where the deputy was shot.
Angelo Jose Saldivar was being treated for injuries he suffered when he was thrown from his motorcycle during a high-speed pursuit along the 210 Freeway Monday, and the Sheriffs’ Department said he would be booked on suspicion of murder once released from a hospital.
Deputy Nunez was shot just after 12:30 p.m. after responding to a domestic violence report in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga, where court records show Saldivar lived with a woman.
Nunez was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Sheriff’s Department said Saldivar fled on a motorcycle and was pursued by officers and deputies from several law enforcement agencies – reaching speeds of more than 150 mph before a narcotics unit deputy driving an undercover vehicle swerved and knocked Saldivar off the bike near Campus Ave.
Deputy Nunez was 28 years old and had worked as a deputy for six years. He and his wife have a 2-year-old daughter and were expecting another child.
