Law enforcement is investigating after a widely circulated video on social media shows an unpermitted fireworks display on the Sixth Street Bridge in Los Angeles.
The video begins with dozens of people on the bridge, along with numerous fireworks carefully placed down the bridge in a line. The explosives are then set off, creating a fireworks show in the sky.
The takeover appeared to be a coordinated event, with one person in the video being heard giving directions.
“As soon as those are up in the air, we’re going to hit everything, all right?” one individual in the video says.
Following the fireworks, firefighters could be seen in the video responding to the bridge, extinguishing at least two small fires.
The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a rubbish fire at about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 27 on the 1400 block of 6th Street. It said crews saw smoldering debris at a couple of locations upon arriving.
“This reckless incident put both drivers and pedestrians at risk,” LA Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement regarding the incident. “The use of unpermitted, commercial-grade fireworks is dangerous and has no place on busy roadways. The LAPD is aware of this incident and is using every available resource to prevent it from happening again.”
A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said the department had “no record of the incident, nor can we confirm the date based on the creator’s claim.” LAPD did, however, acknowledge the dangers of illegal displays of commercial-grade fireworks.
It’s unclear if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
